"Eight Brothers"  -- In this pencil drawing, I was concentrating on depicting the relationships between these eight brothers.  The technique to me was entirely secondary.  Do you notice their father in the background?

.

This drawing was drawn from a photo from about 90-100 years ago, taken in Texas.

.

The eight brothers are divided into two groups.  The focus of the left group of four is the seated brother with a bow-tie.  I think that he was a doctor.  I see him as being the protector of the three youngest brothers because two of them are resting their hands on his shoulder; and all three have at least a portion of their bodies behind him.

.

The cluster of brothers on the right are mostly older, more rugged and intimidating.  The two brothers on the upper right are facing one-another and look alike.

.

Interestingly, the buttons on all of their jackets are over-sized by today's standards.  In the photograph, the right arms of the two right figures, and the left arm of the boy on the left were not there.  I had to draw them in.  Return to "Portraits Page."
